Let’s start by knowing what is a Ketogenic diet is? The Keto diet, AKA the Ketogenic diet is a meal plan that mainly focuses on eating lots of healthy fats and protein, and lowering the intake of carbs. The word Ketogenic itself means the production of what its known as ketones in the body.
The goal of the Keto diet program is to enable the body to start producing ketones in the liver instead of producing insulin and glucose (1) .
When you adopt a Keto diet plan, the body changes its way of burning energy, using ketones (fat) as the main energy source.
Now you are probably wondering, how does Keto diet works?
Well, when you reduce your general food intake, your body goes into a Ketosis mode, which helps your body survive with the low energy supply; the ketones are produced because your body starts to breakdown the stored fat to provide energy (2).
Keto diet focuses on depriving the body carbs and supplying it with protein and fats instead. Your body then becomes very efficient in relying on fats as the main energy source.
Health benefits that come as a result of adopting the Keto diet program include the decrease of sugar and insulin levels in the blood, fast weight loss and higher cholesterol levels which help you maintain your energy through your day.
